Let's face it...your fondest memory of tires is
probably the big old swing you rode on during those care-free summer days. But times
have changed. And today, you need a tire dependable enough to carry you through
your busy day,
and back home again. But which tire do you choose? All Season? Performance? Aqua?
or All-Terrain Light Truck?
And most importantly, where do you turn or who do you trust for advice?
At Hillen Tires, we want to change the way you look at tires and take the pressure
out of choosing them. Just take 10 minutes to look over this guide before you buy
and you'll be well on your way to a safer, smarter tire purchase.
Four Easy Steps To Tire Buying
1 - The first step is to determine whether or not you
need new tires.
All that's required is a quick visual inspection because today, automobile and light
truck tires are manufactured with built-in tread wear indicators. These indicators
are the bars built into the bottom of the tread grooves that appear when 2/32" of
the tread remains -- or approximately 20% of the tread is left.
If you can see these bars, it is definitely time to replace the tire.
2 - Tire size.
The next thing you'll want to determine is the proper size needed on your vehicle.
You'll find this information in your vehicle's owner's manual. The size is also
listed on the sidewall of your tire along with other tire attributes, including
speed ratings, mud and snow ratings, UTQG treat wear, traction and temperature ratings,
the load range and more. We've explained the most common terms in the Tire Terminology
section.
3 - Analyze AND PARTICULAR TYPE OF DRIVING.
Do you drive a...
- Performance car?
- Traditional family vehicle?
- Multi Purpose vehicle? (pickup, 4x4 or sport utility vehicle)
- What about weather where you live?
4 - Check your budget and needs.
In reality, buying a tire isn't much different than buying anything else. In all
cases, you must consider the price and your budget. In the case of buying tires,
ask yourself questions like, "How long am I going to keep the vehicle? Will I be
making lengthy trips? Keep in mind that the cheapest tire is not always the best
value, while the most expensive tire may not be required for your type of driving.
We will be happy to help you determine which tire is just right for you.
